Leg Hair Removal Options Available in Chicago and Other Places

by Joyce Pendelthumb

Most women will spend a large amount of time each week in an age-old custom. Removing the hair from their legs is a part of everyday life for many women. Ladies will try just about anything to have smooth hair free legs, from waxes and depilatory creams to tweezing.

What if there was a better way to achieve those smooth legs that every woman dreams of? Is there really a method that can leave your legs soft and silky for months at a time, maybe even permanently? Actually, there is and it is called laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal has been an accepted practice in the dermatology profession for more than 20 years. Initial testing of lasers for hair removal began in the 70s and was finally commercially available in the early 90s. Now it is one of the most commonly used hair removal practices in the nation.

What to Know

The long road from discovery to use is good news for consumers and makes this a safe treatment for unwanted leg hair. Nevertheless, before you run out to find a practitioner there are a few things you should be aware of.

The process has been improved over the years, but the best results still come when used on dark hair and light skin. This is because the laser process is actually an intense light that passes through the skin until it hits melanin, the dark pigment responsible for hair color. The laser hits the dark color with intense heat, which damages the hair follicle and inhibits hair growth, while not affecting the lighter skin around the area.

You want to choose someone who is experienced in the area of laser hair removal. They should be a board certified dermatologist who has been trained to perform laser treatments. Many times a nurse or assistant will perform these treatments and in this case, the physician should be present at all times throughout the procedure.

As with any type of procedure, there are risks associated with laser treatments. You may find that the hair is only partially removed or re-growth occurs at the same rate. You could also experience a change in skin tone around the area, sometimes darker, sometimes lighters. Rarely this skin lightening will be a long term or permanent occurrence.

What to Expect

The first thing that should occur is a meeting between you and the dermatologist to assess your needs and wants. They should be very frank with you about what you can expect and explain that laser hair removal is not a onetime deal. If you are looking for permanent hair reduction, you can expect many treatments over the course of a year to accomplish this goal.

When you compare laser hair removal for the legs to the many other temporary fixes such as shaving, waxing and depilatory creams it is easy to see which comes out on top. Even when the hair removal is not permanent, you can reasonably expect weeks, months and even years of hair free living. What could possibly be better than that?
